Characteristics of
Merbau Wood/Vengai/Honne Wood
Merbau wood, also known as Kwila wood, is scientifically recognized as Intsia bijuga and is native to Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Papua New Guinea.
This highly durable and aesthetically appealing hardwood, often referred to as Merbau or Kwila, finds extensive use in various applications, including flooring, furniture, and outdoor construction.
- Appearance: Merbau wood (Kwila) typically has a distinctive reddish-brown color with a golden or orange hue, and its grain can be interlocked or wavy, adding to its attractive look. The wood often contains natural oils that give it a shiny appearance.
- Durability: Known for its exceptional durability, Merbau wood is resistant to both decay and insects, including termites, making it suitable for outdoor applications such as Kwila decking.
- Hardness: Merbau timber is very hard, making it resistant to wear and tear.
However, Merbau wood has been a subject of environmental concern due to overharvesting and illegal logging. The species is listed under the CITES Appendix II, which regulates its trade to prevent endangerment. Sustainable sourcing and certification (e.g., FSC certification) are crucial for ensuring that the wood is harvested responsibly.
Regular maintenance, especially in outdoor applications, is necessary to retain its appearance and longevity, including periodic cleaning, oiling, and sealing to protect against the elements and UV radiation.
